The YMCA Head Start program provides children 3 to 5 years old with a brighter future. The Head Start program has a long tradition of delivering comprehensive and high quality services designed to foster healthy development. Serving low-income children and their families in Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville, this comprehensive child development program provides health, nutrition, educational, social, and emotional services. Head Start program staff helps identify children who may be in need of assessment and works with other agencies and home school districts to ensure that children who are qualified receive services. The staff works closely with children and their families to promote school readiness for children and self-sufficiency for their families.

Who is Eligible?

Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

Families are encouraged to apply.

How to Apply
To enroll your child in the program, the YMCA requires a one hour meeting with staff, or more time as appropriate, to complete the required paperwork. This meeting enables our staff to understand the needs of your child, and gives you a chance to learn about our programs. By signing the enrollment forms, the enrolling parent or legal guardian is certifying that they have legal physical custody and authority for the child. California law requires that parents who have joint legal custody have equal access to all information regarding the child. If you have legal issues, court orders must be submitted to prevent the other parent or legal guardian from certain activities such as picking up the child or visiting the child at the Center. We reserve the right, however, to prohibit individuals from being at the Center if the health and safety of any child is threatened or compromised. Click here for the enrol
