Durham Early Head Start is a collaboration between Durham’s Partnership for Children, Chapel Hill Training-Outreach Project and Healthy Families Durham. Early Head Start is a free, comprehensive child development and family support program for low-income families with children aged birth to three years old and to pregnant women. The Durham EHS program serves 120 children and their families in two program options: center-based and home-based. Pregnant women are enrolled in the home-based option.

Who is Eligible?

Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply
How can I apply? Enrollment Applications can be downloaded here and applications may be submitted at the Durham Early Head Start Office. Proof of income of full time school (Current Month’s Pay stubs, most recent W-2, most recent 1040 Tax form, SSI or TANF documentation, Employer’s statement, Letter from School, School schedule) 3. Proof of child’s age (Copy of Birth Certificate or Passport) 4. Proof of Durham Residency (Copy of any of the following documents with your name and current mailing address - electric, water, gas, phone (not cell) , cable, lease agreement, deed, tax bill) Please call or stop by the Durham Early Head Start Office for more information.
