Head Start operates 16 centers throughout Hinds County for more than 2,000 three- and four-year old children and their families. In coordination with I.S. Sanders YMCA and Willowood Development Center, children age three through grade five receive after-school and full-day summer services at the parent’s expense.

Who is Eligible?

Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply
To apply, please complete the Enrollment Packet. You will also have to present the following: proof of child’s age; family income; and residency in Hinds County. Dates and Times: Applications are taken at any Head Start site between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Program Costs: Free
