Head Start is a federally funded preschool program for children whose families live below the federal poverty guidelines and who have qualifying risk factors. Some examples of qualifying risk factors include developmental delays, substance abuse, physical abuse and a non-English speaking (or limited) household.

Who is Eligible?
Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and
children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and
families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for
services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be
eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some
grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines
as well.

How to Apply
If you believe you may qualify, please call the Preschool Programs Secretary, at 248-726-3022 to be added to our list of applicants for the 2011-2012 school year. Individual interviews/registration will take place in May-August 2011. There is no cost to families for this program. Registration for 2012 - 2013 is on-going.
