Early Head Start/Head Start provide comprehensive child development services to economically disadvantaged children and families, with a special focus on helping children from birth to age five develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school. Early Head Start/Head Start promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of enrolled children through the provision of educational, nutritional, health, social and other services. SAISD Head Start utilizes the SAISD Pre- Kindergarten curriculum guide to ensure that all services are in alignment with the San Angelo ISD curriculum practices.In Early Head Start/Head Start parents are highly encouraged to become active participants in their child's learning. Parents are also provided with assistance in making progress towards their own educational, literacy, and employment goals.
Who is Eligible?
Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and
children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and
families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for
services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be
eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some
grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines
as well.
