The Santa Clara County Office of Education is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to provide Head Start services to 2,150 Head Start eligible preschool age children in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. Head Start centers are located in most cities in the two-county area, including San Jose, Santa Clara, Campbell, Mountain View, Milpitas, Gilroy, and Hollister.

Who is Eligible?

Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines as well.

How to Apply
REQUIRED DOCUMENTSYour application must be complete and include copies of the following documents (documents will not be returned):• Birth Certificate• Immunization Records• TB Assessment and/or TB Test Results• Income Verification - Documentation must reflect your current economic status and must include allsources of income received by the child's parents or guardians such as:o Current pay stubs showing last two (2) months worth of incomeo Letter from employer stating hours worked per week and pay rate (only if unable to provide pay stubs)o Latest Income Tax Return or W-2 (if seasonally employed, self-employed, or if unable to provide pay stubs; must reflect current economic status)o Unemployment Incomeo Worker's Compensationo Child Supporto Disability Income• Proof of Legal Custody (if child is in foster care)• Notice of Action (if receiving CalWORKs)• Proof of Supplemental Security Income (if applicable)• Homelessness Verification (if
