Description:
Head Start was implemented during the summer of 1965, and approximately 550,000 children in 2,500 child development centers were enrolled in the program. The purpose of Head Start was literally to give children a head start in their educational experience and, it was hoped, this good start would be transferred onto future life experiences. Today, the National Head Start program serves approximately 752,000 children and families and is based on the premise that all children share certain needs and that children with disabilities, in particular, can benefit from a comprehensive developmental program to meet those needs.
