Head Start programs provide comprehensive child development for children birth to 5 years old depending upon the program option available. (Early Head Start serves children birth-3 years old; Head Start serves children 3-5 years old.)The purposes of the Head Start program are to enhance children's physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development; to support parents' efforts to fulfill their parental roles; and to help families move toward self-sufficiency.Services are individualized to meet the needs and developmental levels of the enrollees as well as specialized services for children with disabilities, utilizing community resources.
