Early Head Start is a comprehensive child development program which serves children from birth to age three, pregnant women, and their families. It is a child-focused program and has the overall goal of increasing the social competence of young children in low-income families. “Social Competence†means the child’s everyday effectiveness in dealing with both his or her present environment, and later responsibilities in school and life. Social competence takes into account the interrelatedness of social, emotional, cognitive and physical development.
Who is Eligible?
Children who are 3 to 5 years old are eligible for Head Start services. Pregnant women and
children from birth to 3 years of age are eligible for Early Head Start services. Children and
families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for
services. Eligibility is determined by Head Start program staff and some families may be
eligible for services if they are determined to be at or below the federal poverty level. Some
grantees enroll a percentage of children from families with incomes above the Poverty Guidelines
as well.

Position Summary:
All children are required to be supervised by a qualified assistant while being transported. The ratio of children to assistants is 8:1.
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
No prior or some experience in ability to work with young children and their families.
Education/Training:
Equivalent to a high school education including general training and experience.
